Descriptions

The Gα subunits of heterotrimeric G proteins are GTP hydrolyases which, upon receptor activation, bind to GTP and regulate effector molecules. Gα-catalyzed hydrolysis of GTP to GDP releases the Gα-GDP product complex from effector and allows its sequestration by inhibitory Gβγ subunits. In Gia1-GppNHp complex, Gln204 of Gia1 interacts with nucleophilic water (Wnuc), participating directly in the Gia1-GTP ground state but must reorient to stabilize the transition state. RGS4, a member of the RGS family of G protein stimulatory factors, accelerates hydrolysis of GTP by Gia1 by destabilizing the ground-state conformation of Gln204. Insertion of Asn128 of RGS4 into the active site enhances catalysis by aiding in binding, orienting, and polarizing Wnuc in the pre-transition state complex. Asn128 of RGS4 displaces the side chain of Gln204 from its anti-catalytic position in the ground state, freeing it to participate in stabilization of the transition state.

6 GO annotations of cellular component

Name Definition
apical cortex The region that lies just beneath the plasma membrane on the apical edge of a cell.
apical plasma membrane The region of the plasma membrane located at the apical end of the cell.
cell cortex The region of a cell that lies just beneath the plasma membrane and often, but not always, contains a network of actin filaments and associated proteins.
cytoplasm The contents of a cell excluding the plasma membrane and nucleus, but including other subcellular structures.
heterotrimeric G-protein complex Any of a family of heterotrimeric GTP-binding and hydrolyzing proteins; they belong to a superfamily of GTPases that includes monomeric proteins such as EF-Tu and RAS. Heterotrimeric G-proteins consist of three subunits; the alpha subunit contains the guanine nucleotide binding site and possesses GTPase activity; the beta and gamma subunits are tightly associated and function as a beta-gamma heterodimer; extrinsic plasma membrane proteins (cytoplasmic face) that function as a complex to transduce signals from G protein-coupled receptors to an effector protein.
plasma membrane The membrane surrounding a cell that separates the cell from its external environment. It consists of a phospholipid bilayer and associated proteins.

6 GO annotations of molecular function

Name Definition
DNA binding Any molecular function by which a gene product interacts selectively and non-covalently with DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid).
G protein-coupled receptor binding Binding to a G protein-coupled receptor.
G-protein beta/gamma-subunit complex binding Binding to a complex of G-protein beta/gamma subunits.
GTP binding Binding to GTP, guanosine triphosphate.
GTPase activity Catalysis of the reaction
metal ion binding Binding to a metal ion.

13 GO annotations of biological process

Name Definition
adenylate cyclase-modulating G protein-coupled receptor signaling pathway A G protein-coupled receptor signaling pathway in which the signal is transmitted via the activation or inhibition of adenylyl cyclase activity and a subsequent change in the intracellular concentration of cyclic AMP (cAMP).
asymmetric cell division The asymmetric division of cells to produce two daughter cells with different developmental potentials. It is of fundamental significance for the generation of cell diversity.
asymmetric neuroblast division The process resulting in the physical partitioning and separation of a neuroblast into two daughter cells with different developmental potentials.
asymmetric protein localization involved in cell fate determination Any process in which a protein is transported to, or maintained in, a specific asymmetric distribution, resulting in the formation of daughter cells of different types.
axon ensheathment in central nervous system The process in which a glial cell membrane closes around an axon in the central nervous system. This can be a myelinating or a non-myelinating neuron-glial interaction.
calcium-mediated signaling Any intracellular signal transduction in which the signal is passed on within the cell via calcium ions.
cortical actin cytoskeleton organization A process that is carried out at the cellular level which results in the assembly, arrangement of constituent parts, or disassembly of actin-based cytoskeletal structures in the cell cortex, i.e. just beneath the plasma membrane.
establishment of glial blood-brain barrier Establishment of the glial barrier between the blood and the brain. The glial cells in the brain are packed tightly together preventing the passage of most molecules from the blood into the brain. Only lipid soluble molecules or those that are actively transported can pass through the blood-brain barrier.
establishment of spindle orientation Any process that set the alignment of spindle relative to other cellular structures.
G protein-coupled receptor signaling pathway The series of molecular signals initiated by a ligand binding to its receptor, in which the activated receptor promotes the exchange of GDP for GTP on the alpha-subunit of an associated heterotrimeric G-protein complex. The GTP-bound activated alpha-G-protein then dissociates from the beta- and gamma-subunits to further transmit the signal within the cell. The pathway begins with receptor-ligand interaction, and ends with regulation of a downstream cellular process. The pathway can start from the plasma membrane, Golgi or nuclear membrane.
regulation of protein localization Any process that modulates the frequency, rate or extent of any process in which a protein is transported to, or maintained in, a specific location.
septate junction assembly The assembly of a septate junction, an intercellular junction found in invertebrate epithelia that is characterized by a ladder like appearance in electron micrographs and thought to provide structural strength and to provide a barrier to diffusion of solutes through the intercellular space.
ventral cord development The process whose specific outcome is the progression of the ventral cord over time, from its formation to the mature structure. The ventral cord is one of the distinguishing traits of the central nervous system of all arthropods (such as insects, crustaceans and arachnids) as well as many other invertebrates, such as the annelid worms.
