Descriptions

PRE9, proteasome subunit α type-3, is a subunit of the proteasome. The core particle (CP) is a cylindrical particle composed of four stacked rings of subunits, with each ring containing seven distinct subunits. The outer rings are composed of seven α subunits, the inner rings of seven β subunits, which contain the active sites. The N-terminal segments of the α3 subunit seals the central channel, which prevents substrate entry by imposing topological closure on the CP. Inhibition by the α3 subunit tail is relieved upon binding of the regulatory particle to the CP to form the proteasome holoenzyme.

3 GO annotations of cellular component

Name Definition
cytosol The part of the cytoplasm that does not contain organelles but which does contain other particulate matter, such as protein complexes.
nucleus A membrane-bounded organelle of eukaryotic cells in which chromosomes are housed and replicated. In most cells, the nucleus contains all of the cell's chromosomes except the organellar chromosomes, and is the site of RNA synthesis and processing. In some species, or in specialized cell types, RNA metabolism or DNA replication may be absent.
proteasome core complex, alpha-subunit complex The proteasome core subcomplex that constitutes the two outer rings of the proteasome core complex. An example of this component is found in Mus musculus.

2 GO annotations of biological process

Name Definition
proteasomal protein catabolic process The chemical reactions and pathways resulting in the breakdown of a protein or peptide by hydrolysis of its peptide bonds that is mediated by the proteasome.
ubiquitin-dependent protein catabolic process The chemical reactions and pathways resulting in the breakdown of a protein or peptide by hydrolysis of its peptide bonds, initiated by the covalent attachment of a ubiquitin group, or multiple ubiquitin groups, to the protein.
